Brent Malone hired as the first Convention and Tourism Bureau Executive Director

On July 13, 2016, the members of the Grove Convention & Tourism Bureau recommended hiring Brent Malone as the Executive Director.   Malone will be the first person to serve in this position, and he will begin on August 1, 2016.

Malone will be a city employee and will report to Bill Keefer, City Manager.  The Bureau members will provide direction on projects and budget matters.

United States Army National Guard

U. S. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD - The Army National Guard began on December 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony organized three militia regiments to defend against the growing threat of the Pequot Indians.

International Order of the Rainbow for Girls

INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF THE RAINBOW FOR GIRLS - An organization planned to sow the seeds of love, law, religion, patriotism, and service in the hearts of the girlhood of America for harvest in the coming years. These sentiments prompted a Brother, the Rev. William Mark Sexson, McAlester, Oklahoma, then the Grand Chaplain of his State, to write the ritual and lay the foundations of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls emphasizes the following:

Bed or Pillows

BED OR PILLOWS - Symbolizes the deceased is now at rest.  Cribs and beds are sometimes seen holding the images of sleeping children, or are often empty.  Empty furniture symbolized unfulfilled lives of children and represented the child now gone.

Buddhism (Dharma Wheel)

DHARMA WHEEL (BUDDHISM) - The dharma wheel, or dharma chakra in Sanskrit, is one of the oldest symbols of Buddhism.  Around the globe it is used to represent Buddhism in the same way that a cross represents Christianity or a Star of David represents Judaism.  It is also one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism.

Medal, Silver Star

SILVER STAR MEDAL -  The Silver Star Medal is the United States' third highest award exclusively for combat valor, and ranks fifth in the precedence of military awards behind the Medal of Honor, the Crosses (DSC/NC/AFC), the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (awarded by DOD), and the Distinguished Service Medals of the various branches of service. It is the highest award for combat valor that is NOT unique to any specific branch; it has been bestowed by the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS - The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882, it was named in honor of the mariner Christopher Columbus.

Hummingbird

HUMMINGBIRD - The hummingbird is known as a messenger of love, joy and beauty.  It is not commonly known that the fluttering wings of the hummingbird move in the pattern of an infinity symbol - further solidifying the symbolism of eternity, continuity, and infinity.  When the hummingbird hovers over flowers while drinking the nectar, it symbolizes that we should savor each moment and appreciate the things we love.  The prime message of the hummingbird animal totem is "The sweetest nectar is within!"
