Epworth League (Methodist)

EPWORTH LEAGUE -  The Epworth League is a Methodist young adult association for individuals from 18 to 35.  It traces back to the founding of the organization by the United Methodist Church's predecessor denomination, the Methodist Episcopal Church, formed in 1889 at Cleveland, Ohio, by the combination of five currently existing young people's organizations.

Medal, Air

AIR MEDAL -  The Air Medal is a military decoration of the United States military. The medal was created in 1942 and is awarded for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.

Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross

DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS -  The Distinguished Flying Cross is a military decoration awarded to any officer or enlisted member of the United States Armed Forces who distinguishes himself or herself in support of operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight, subsequent to November 11, 1918."

Medal, Legion of Merit

LEGION OF MERIT MEDAL - The Legion of Merit (LOM) is a military award of the United States Armed Forces that is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.  The decoration is issued to members of the seven uniformed services of the United States as well as to military and political figures of foreign governments.

"Let His/Her Soul be Bound Up in the bond of Eternal Life" (Hebrew)

LET HIS (OR HER) SOUL BE BOUND UP IN THE BOND OF ETERNAL LIFE (HEBREW) -  The Hebrew letters are .ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.   It is customary, but not obligatory, to put these letters on the bottom of a headstone.  These letters are an acronym for the Hebrew words תהא נפשו/ה צרורה בצרור החיים (t'hay nafsho/ah tzrurah b'tzror hachaim),  "May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life."  This paraphrases the words that Abigail told King David "But my lord's soul shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord your God" (KJV 1 Sam 25:29)

Here Lies (Hebrew)

HERE LIES (HEBREW) - Found on Jewish tombstones "Here Lies" or "Here is Buried".  The six-pointed Star of David, a symbol of Judaism, is frequently found on Jewish tombstones.  It is also called the Shield of David (Magen David in Hebrew).  Sometimes you will see the Hebrew abbreviation “Peh-Nun” inside the star like the example here.  This abbreviation stands for either “poh nitman” or “poh nikbar” and means simply, “here lies…”

Harley-Davidson Motorcycles

HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLES - Harley-Davidson is the iconic American motorcycle manufacturer.  The obsession with this American Company has grown immensely from the 1980's through today (2016).   Founded out of a small shed in 1903 by William S. Harley and brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The Motor Company produces traditional cruiser motorcycles utilizing air-cooled V-Twin engines.

Hippopotamus

HIPPOPOTAMUS -  The hippopotamus is sacred in both Egyptian and African traditions.  Its name means ‘Water Horse’, and it spends nearly all day in the water.  This is the ancient realm of birth, power, creation, imagination, and healing.   Hippos are the second largest mammal on earth.
